Vegetarian Shawarma Sandwiches -

A real Middle Eastern treat! These shawarma sandwiches are so satisfying you will forget they are veggie!

  • 1 Tsp. Vegetable oil
  • 1 Block Tofu, drained and grated
  • 1 Onion, peeled and grated
  • 1 Clove Garlic, minced
  • 2 Tbsp. Sumac
  • 3 Tbsp. Tahini
  • 3 Tbsp. Pickle Juice
  • Juice of 1 lemon
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 Tsp. Sugar
  • 4 Pita Breads
  • 1 Cup Hummus


  1. In a pan over medium high heat, add the oil with the grated tofu, onions and garlic. Stir fry for about 5 minutes until the tofu is slightly browned. Add in the sumac, salt, pepper and sugar and mix well.
  2. Add the tahini and pickle juice and allow to cook for 2 more minutes. Remove from heat and add the lemon juice.
  3. Serve in pita breads topped with hummus, tomatoes, pickled turnips, cabbage and hot peppers if desired.
